The Bridge between Beginning and Intermediate Spanish

This class strengthens the skills that Beginning students didn’t fully master and builds the confidence needed to move forward. You’ll review the “problematic Spanish” that often causes hesitation — tricky grammar patterns, unclear sentence structures, common beginner mistakes, and how and when to use reflexive verbs. Most importantly, you’ll prepare for the next step: using the Pretérito and Imperfecto past tenses with clarity and confidence.

Intermediate Spanish

Use Spanish more naturally and confidently with stronger grammar, richer vocabulary, and real‑life practice. Learn the Pretérito and Imperfecto past tenses and how to use them in everyday conversation. Clarify Indirect Object Pronouns and Direct Object Pronouns so they finally make sense and feel easy to use. Lastly, enjoy a gentle introduction to the subjunctive and the present perfect — all in a steady, supportive environment that builds fluency step by step.

Beginning Level —

Part I: Enrique y María

This section follows two high‑school students, Enrique and María, through everyday life: school, family, hobbies, clubs, letters, and simple cultural notes. The Spanish is very gentle — short sentences, present tense, predictable vocabulary, and lots of repetition.

How it feels for seniors: Comfortable, friendly, and confidence‑building. The stories feel familiar and non‑intimidating, which makes reading in Spanish feel doable from day one.

Skills developed:

  • Present tense

  • Basic connectors (y, pero, porque)

  • Everyday vocabulary

  • Reading stamina without overwhelm

Intermediate Level —

Part II: Mexican History

This section shifts into short historical episodes from Mexico’s past: the Aztecs, Moctezuma, Cortés, La Malinche, the fall of Tenochtitlán, colonial life, independence, and modern Mexico. The chapters are still simplified but use richer vocabulary and past‑tense narration.

How it feels for seniors: Engaging and story‑driven. The history is dramatic enough to keep interest high, but written simply enough that learners don’t get lost.

Skills developed:

  • Pretérito vs imperfecto

  • Historical and cultural vocabulary

  • Longer sentence patterns

  • Sequential storytelling

Advanced Level —

Part III: Lazarillo de Tormes

This final section is an adapted version of Lazarillo de Tormes, a classic Spanish picaresque novel. It introduces literary style — still simplified, but more sophisticated than the earlier parts.

How it feels for seniors: A gentle doorway into real Spanish literature. It’s more challenging, but the adaptation keeps it accessible and interesting.

Skills developed:

  • Literary vocabulary

  • Dialogue and descriptive narration

  • Cultural references from Spain’s Golden Age

  • Higher‑level comprehension and nuance
